Antonio Vasquez Urteaga

Antonio Vasquez Urteaga, 82, of San Angelo passed away on Tuesday, November 29, 2022.

Viewing will be from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM Sunday, December 4, 2022 at Robert Massie Funeral Home, 402 Rio Concho Drive, with the rosary at 6:00 PM. Mass will be at 10:00 AM Monday, December 5, 2022 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 301 W. 17th Street with Father Juan Lopez-Cortes, officiating. A burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.

Antonio was born February 3, 1940 in Zaragoza, Coahuila, Mexico to Pedro and Rufina Vasquez Urteaga. He married Aurora Regalado on October 31, 1959. Antonio moved to Galveston in 1969 where he was a welder in the shipyards. A year later, his family joined him. He was always looking for ways to provide for his family. In the evenings Antonio would spend hours weaving fishing nets to sell. On the weekends while the children played on the beach, he would catch fish and sell them in the market. He moved to Eagle Pass in 1971 and then to Del Rio in 1973. During the summer months the family were migrant workers traveling to Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois picking asparagus, strawberries, cucumbers and lettuce. He used this income to build the family home which he completed in the early 1980s. Antonio began working for a nursery where he was known for his green thumb and love of growing plants and flowers. When the nursery closed, he worked as a janitor at San Felipe ISD. The children and staff loved "Tony", as he was called. His work extended to weekends being a handyman and helping staff members with their own gardens. He retired from the school in 2010 and moved to San Angelo in 2012 to be closer to his children. Antonio helped his son-in-law Juan at the KST Ranch and his daughter Aurora at her business. He was always finding ways to help and stay busy. Antonio was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Del Rio, serving as a Eucharistic Minister, teacher and speaker at retreats and bible studies in Del Rio and Acuna. He was very cheerful and a great dancer. All the grandchildren loved Wuelito; even when he teased and rough housed with them. He enjoyed holding the rope to the piñata at all the birthday parties and teasing the kids as they tried to get the candy out. When he was pulled from work, he thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors-hunting and fishing. He spent many nights pulling nets and having long talks with sons and grandsons on fishing boats.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Jose Jesus Urteaga, and his grandson Eduardo Torres III.

Left to mourn his loss include his wife of 63 years, Aurora; seven children, Luis A. Urteaga and wife Diamantina of San Angelo, Deacon Fermin C. Urteaga and wife Sonia of San Antonio, Lucy T. Enriquez and husband Juan of San Angelo, Rebeca Aguirre of Odessa, Aurora U. Prieto and husband Pablo of San Angelo, Juan M. Urteaga and wife Bertha of San Angelo, and Jose G. Urteaga and wife Lusy of Midland; three siblings, Pedro Urteaga and wife Elida of Houston, Jose Luis Urteaga and wife Maria of Chicago and Juanita Simpson and husband Buck of Dudley, North Carolina, 21 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Antonio passed away on the National Day of Giving. Very appropriate and fitting for a Dad who always and without hesitation gave ALL for his children.

Vigilia será el 4 de diciembre, 2022 de la 1:00pm a 8:00pm con el rosario a las 6:00pm en Robert Massie Funeral Home, 402 Rio Concho Drive. Misa será a la 10:00am lunes, diciembre 5, 2022 en iglesia St. Joseph, 301 W. 17th Street, con el Padre Juan López-Cortes. Entierro en Calvary Catholic Cemetery después de la misa.

Antonio nació febrero 3, 1940 en Zaragoza, Coahuila, México, hijo de Pedro y Rufina Vásquez Urteaga. Se caso con Aurora Regalado en octubre 31, 1959. Antonio se mudó a Galveston en 1969 donde trabajo como Soldador en los astilleros. Un año después, su familia se unió a él. Siempre busco maneras de proveer para su familia. Por las tardes, pasaba horas tejiendo redes de pesca para vender. Los fines de semana mientras sus hijos jugaban en la playa, él se la pasaba pescando para luego vender los pescados en el mercado. Se mudo para Eagle Pass en 1971 y luego a Del Rio en 1973. Durante los meses de verano toda la familia se iba a Wisconsin, Minnesota y Illinois a la pisca de esparrago, fresas, pepinos y lechuga como trabajadores migrantes. El uso esos ingresos para construir el hogar de la familia que acabo a los principios de los 1980's. Antonio empezó a trabajar en un vivero donde fue conocido por su capacidad de cultivar plantas. Cuando el vivero cerró sus puertas, el empezó a trabajar como conserje de la escuela San Felipe ISD. Todos los estudiantes y el personal querían mucho a "Tony" como le llamaban. Su trabajo se extendía a los fines de semana haciendo 'trabajitos aquí y allá' y manteniendo los jardines de muchos de los maestros de la escuela. Se jubilo de San Felipe ISD en 2010 y se mudó a San Ángelo en 2012 para estar más cerca de su familia. Antonio le ayudo a su yerno Juan en el Rancho KST y a su hija Aurora en su negocio. Siempre buscaba maneras de mantenerse ocupado y de ayudar. Antonio fue miembro de St. Joseph Catholic Church en Del Rio, sirviendo como ministro eucarístico, maestro y presentador de platicas en retiros y reuniones de oración en Del Rio y Acuna. Era muy alegre y un gran bailador. Todos los nietos adoraban a su Wuelito, aunque él les hiciera bromas y jugueteaba con ellos. Era su alegría el poder controlar el cordón de las piñatas en todas las fiestas y se reía de carcajadas cuando bromeaba con los niños que intentaban sacarle los dulces a la piñata. Cuando dejaba su trabajo por un momento, disfrutaba en pleno de ir de casería e ir de pesca. Paso muchos momentos de casería, estirando redes del agua, pescando y platicando con sus hijos y nietos sentado en su barquito de pesca.

Fue precedido en la muerte por sus padres, su hermano José Jesús Urteaga y un nieto Eduardo Torres III.

Sobrevivientes incluyen su esposa de 63 años, Aurora; siete hijos, Luis A. Urteaga y esposa Diamantina de San Ángelo, Diacono Fermín C. Urteaga y esposa Sonia de San Antonio, Lucy T. Enríquez y esposo Juan de San Ángelo, Rebeca Aguirre de Odessa, Aurora U. Prieto y esposo Pablo de San Ángelo, Juan M. Urteaga y esposa Bertha de San Ángelo y José G. Urteaga y esposa Lusy de Midland; tres hermanos, Pedro Urteaga y esposa Elida de Houston, José Luis Urteaga y esposa María de Chicago y Juanita Simpson y esposo Buck de Dudley, North Carolina, 21 nietos y 18 bisnietos.

Antonio falleció en el Dia Nacional de la Generosidad. Muy apropiado y adecuado para un Papa que siempre y sin dudarlo dio TODO por sus hijos.
