Funeral services for Arlena R. Hinnant, 98, will be conducted in the Robert Massie Riverside Chapel at 4pm, Tuesday, April 9. Visitation with the family will be from 3 to 4pm on Tuesday. Private interment service will be held at a later date in Lawnhaven Memorial Cemetery. Arlena went to be with her Savior at 1:40pm on Saturday, April 6, at her residence at The Waterford in College Station, TX. Arlena was born to Thomas Y. and Edna Roberson, January 16, 1915 in Falls County, Texas. She was a long time resident of San Angelo and Wall, Texas. She was a graduate of San Angelo High School in 1932 and the San Angelo Business College in 1934. She married Claude William "Bill" Hinnant March 16, 1945. Arlena started her professional career with Shannon Hospital but soon was employed by San Angelo National Bank in 1935. She worked at SANB from 1935 until she retired in 1980. She began working at the bank as a switchboard operator and retired as the first woman to be elected as Senior Vice President of any bank in San Angelo. Her auditing procedures were adopted by one of the larger Houston banks that had purchased SANB. She was also the first woman from Texas to attend and graduate from the Bank Administration Institute in Madison, Wisconsin. Arlena served on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Bank Women and as Group Chair of the Panhandle-West Texas Group. She was also named to the Who's Who of American Women in 1977. Arlena was an active member of the First Baptist Church, teaching Sunday School Class to four-year-olds for over 35 years. She has served as president of Altrusa Club, and an officer in the Business and Professional Women's Club, director and treasurer of the San Angelo Day School (now the San Angelo Early Childhood Center) and was a lifetime member of the A&M Mother's Club. For many years, she and her husband Bill delivered for Meals to the Elderly. Survivors are her beloved son and daughter-in-law, Ray and Sherry Hinnant of College Station, grandchildren Cody and his wife Christy Hinnant of San Antonio, and Christa and her husband Sean McCarthy of Austin who are expecting their first child. She was blessed with one great-granddaughter, Rebecca Joy Hinnant, of San Antonio. She is also survived by a favorite niece Pat and her husband Gene Ford. The family requests memorials be made to the San Angelo Early Childhood Center, Meals for the Elderly, or your favorite charity. Honorary pallbearers will be friends and family.
