Benny Ray Jenkins

Benny Ray Jenkins, 75, of San Angelo Texas, peacefully entered the kingdom of heaven on May 23, 2013. Ben was born in Fort Worth, Texas on March 24, 1938 to Elmer and Lucille Jenkins. Ben married Donna Jenkins January 1, 1993, in San Angelo, Texas, where they shared 6 children together. He was owner and operator of Jenkins Insurance and Investments, and an insurance agent and financial advisor for 50 years. Before becoming an insurance agent, Ben was a Navy man. He sailed aboard the now historic USS Lexington, and served as one of the lead radio operators from 1956-1959. Some of his fondest memories are aboard "The Lady Lex". Aboard this ship is where he found his deep love for his country and the servicemen and women who dedicate their lives protecting it. A piece of his spirit will always remain with The Lady Lex. After leaving the Navy Ben found his calling. He became a door to door insurance agent for National Life and Accident at 23 years old. A small amount of time and several hundred door knockers later, Ben found himself promoted to territory manager. During that time Ben mentored, trained and cared for many employees, and several hundred clients. After leaving National Life and Accident in 1977, Ben opened Jenkins Insurance and Investments in San Angelo, Texas. During this time Ben cultivated loving and lasting relationships with all of his clients, fellow agents, and companies. Ben wanted to serve his clients to the very best of his ability, so he continued his education in the insurance and investment industry, and gained distinguished titles such as LUTCF, CLU, ChFC, and FSS. Ben was a 25 year member of Texas Leaders Round Table, Million Dollar Round Table, past president of National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors, served all chairs in the San Angelo Downtown Lions club, including past president. He was a member of the century club for Texas Lions Camp, a distinguished Toast Master, a board member for Meals for the Elderly, a Junior League of San Angelo Service Honoree, a building chair for St Lukes Methodist Church, and a Member of the city of San Angelo Planning Commission. Ben wholeheartedly believed in the responsibility of servicing his country, church, clients and community. But above all he believed in his responsibility to love and nurture his family. Ben came to his marriage to Donna in 1993, with two grown daughters and she with two teenage sons and two teenage daughters. It was at that time that the pieces became the whole. A blended family was born, and Ben was the leader. Ben and Donna worked side by side for over 20 years at work and home. He didn't want to spend one moment away from her or she him. Though it was a second time around for both, they found the kind of love that cannot be measured, cannot be contained, and cannot be likened. They proved that while it may be slow in coming, finding your soul mate is worth the wait. Ben was a tenacious father to all six of his children. He guided, loved, and cared for them all equally and is if they were all his own. Ben's pride of his children never wavered, and that pride spilled over into his 15 "perfect grandchildren". Ben was as good a friend as anyone could ask for. If you met Ben, you were his friend! He had several great fishing buddies, wood working friends, and business friendships that turned into brother and sisterhoods. His friends were an extension of his family. Ben was preceded in death by his parents Elmer and Lucille Jenkins, sister Sandra Jenkins, and son Kenneth Ray Jenkins. He is survived by wife Donna Jenkins of San Angelo, children Jami Brumfield, husband Ken, of Tyler, Tracy Hoelscher, husband Scott of Keller, Casey Brown and wife Eve, of San Angelo, Daughter Katie Mochmer and husband Paul of San Angelo, daughter Jenny Shelton and husband Blaine, of San Angelo and son Shane Brown of Odessa, Texas. His brothers Donald and Michael Jenkins of Fort Worth. He is also survived by the 15 lights of his life grandchildren: Colton, Cade, and Conner Brown. Michael, Madeline, and Abigail Mochmer. Family visitation will be Monday May 27 from six p.m. to eight p.m., at Robert Massie Funeral home. Service will be held Tuesday May 28th at 10:00 a.m. at First Christian Church of San Angelo. Interment will be at Fairmont Cemetery immediately following the service. One of Ben's true passions was the San Angelo Meals for the Elderly.
