Betty Jo Harper

Betty Jo Harper, 88, peacefully passed to heaven on October 20, 2018 in San Angelo. A gathering of family and friends will be 5:30 to 7:00 PM, Thursday, October 25, 2018 at First Church of the Nazarene, San Angelo. Memorial service to celebrate Betty's life will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, October 27, 2018 at First Church of the Nazarene with Dr. Greg Ledbetter and Rev. Joni Lancaster officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home. "Grandmother" was born November 17, 1929 to the late Guy and Martha Gibbs in Risco, Missouri. On January 16, 1954 Betty married Ray Harper and they spent 50 years in Lubbock, where she worked in retail sales at The Hollywood Shop, Latham's of Lubbock, and SAS Shoe Store. An active member of the First Assembly of God, Betty served on the Hospitality Committee and Greeter Ministry. After Ray passed away in September 2003 she moved to San Angelo in September 2004 to be close to her family and joined First Church of the Nazarene. "Ms. Betty" continued serving as a greeter but added Dare to Care Note writer and the official "folder of the Sunday bulletins" and "wrapper of all silverware" to her resume! In addition to her church ministries, she was a kitchen assistant at Meals for the Elderly. Betty was dedicated to her volunteer work, but her love for family and Jesus were her greatest blessings! Betty was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brother, Guy Gibbs, Jr. Left to cherish her memory include her daughter Nancy Long and husband Terry of San Angelo; a son, Jack DeWees, Jr. of Liberty Missouri; four grandchildren: Brantley "BJ" Long and wife Jenn of Greensboro, North Carolina, Nichole Bartz and husband Jeremy of Wall, Jack DeWees, III of Franksville, Wisconsin and James DeWees of Buffalo, New York; five great-grandchildren: Kaylee and Landree Bartz, Amos Long, Jack "Jay" and Joshua Dewees; and many longtime friends. A special thank you to Interim Hospice and Regency House for their loving support and care given to Betty for the past 20 months. Memorials may be made to First Church of the Nazarene, 3354 W. Beauregard Avenue, San Angelo, Texas 76904 or Meals for the Elderly, 310 E. 8th Street, San Angelo, Texas 76903. Sign the online register at www.robertmassie.com.
