Douglas A. Guenthner died on January 25, 2018 just nine days before his 97th birthday in Senior Care of San Angelo. Douglas was born on February 3, 1921 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma to L.F. and Merle Guenthner who preceded him in death. His father was a carpenter and foreman by trade and they travelled to Miami, Florida and San Antonio, Texas before settling in San Angelo. Douglas attended public schools in San Angelo and played football for the Central High School Bobcats. After graduating from high school, he attended and played football at San Angelo Junior College. He enlisted in the U.S Navy and returned home on leave to marry Gloria Kay Fread. Upon his discharge they built a home in the Santa Rita area which is where they lived until they each went to care facilities. As a general contractor for 52 years Douglas built or remodeled numerous commercial buildings in San Angelo and West Texas, but his specialty was designing and building unique custom homes with many on West Texas ranches. Douglas was involved in bringing the YMCA to San Angelo and coached Little League Baseball and Peewee Football for many years. Douglas was preceded in death by his parents; brother Orville Guenthner, Ballinger; an infant daughter and Gloria Guenthner, his wife of 60 years. He is survived by brother Frank Guenthner, Ballinger; son and wife Gary and Susan Guenthner, Harper, Texas; son and wife Brian and Terri Guenthner, Pflugerville, Texas; four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Family graveside services were held on February 3, 2018, his 97th birthday, conducted by neighbor and friend Rev. William Proctor.
