Eldon Udell Black, 76, of San Angelo, passed away on November 8, 2005 in Houston, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 pm, Saturday, November 12, at Southland Baptist Church in San Angelo with the Reverend Terry Rothermich of Memorial Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Midland, officiating. Arrangements are made by Robert Massie Funeral Home. Eldon Black was born in Spearman, Texas, to Walter Joseph and Myrtle Black on February 23, 1929. He spent most of his childhood in Dalhart, Texas. He received his undergraduate degree in music in 1953 at the University of North Texas and his Master of Music Education there in 1954, when he came to San Angelo College as Professor of Vocal Music. In 1970 he temporarily left San Angelo for Austin to obtain his Doctorate in Musical Arts in Vocal Performance and then returned to Angelo State University in 1973, where he remained until his retirement in 2003. His uniquely long tenure at ASU made him "senior professor" of the University. Dr. Black was a member of Texas Association of College Teachers, Music Teachers National Association, Texas Music Teachers Association and National Association of Teachers of Singing. Eldon Black is preceded in death by his father, Walter Joseph Black; his mother, Myrtle Black; his brothers W.J. (Dub) Black and Charles Otis Black. He is survived by sister Doris Arlene and Stanley Pleyer; other family: Hazel Black; Glen and Jamie Black; David and Luanne Black, Sarah, Matthew and Andrew; Gloria and Keith McDaniel, Kevin, Kenneth and Kathryn; Chris Black, Tara and James; Karen and Alan Watkins; Janet and Wesley Richins, Clay, Sean, Evan, Alec and Levi; his pets Max and Mavericka; and numerous friends, colleagues and students.
