Elijio Cardenas, 80 of San Angelo went to be with the Lord on Wednesday June 8, 2011 at Baptist Memorial House of Hope after a courageous battle with cancer. Rosary will be 7:00 PM Thursday June 9, 2011 at the Robert Massie Riverside Chapel. A reception hosted by the family will follow the rosary. Mass of Christian burial will be 10:00 AM Friday June 10, 2011 at St. Mary Catholic church with Deacon Roy Ibarra, officiating. Burial will follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Robert Massie Funeral Home. Elijio was born December 1, 1930 in Tankersley, Texas to Galindo G. and Anjelita (Rodriguez) Cardenas. Elijio was a professional baker for over 60 years, working for Holsum's Bakery, Hinson's Bakery and Harry's Food Store and Angelo State University where he retired from in 1996 and then worked part- time at the family business, Heavenly Donuts. He married the love of his life, Enedina Munoz on January 17, 1948 in San Angelo, Texas and they celebrated their 63 anniversary this year. He enjoyed camping, barbequing, cooking for family. He had many, many friends and never met a stranger. He lived for his grandchildren and shared many of his childhood memories with them. He is preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers; Santos Cardenas and Felipe Cardenas and one sister, Juanita Perez. Pallbearers will be Joe Cardenas, Jr., David Garcia, Raymond Rivas, Ignacio (Jr.) Soto, Robert John Rivas, Jamie Soto and Bill Torres. Survivors include his loving wife; Enedina Cardenas of San Angelo; two sons, Carlos Cardenas of Beeville, TX., and Jose Cardenas and wife, Cynthia; two daughters, Rosalinda Rivas and Eva Castro and husband, Jose Escobedo; brother, Juan Cardenas and a sisters, Lola Rodriguez, all of San Angelo; grandchildren, Brenda Escalante, Paula Cardenas, Joe Cardenas, Jr., Robert John Rivas, Jennifer Cardenas, Freddy Castro, Raymond Rivas and Veronica Castro; fifteen great-grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the Dr. Cummings and the nurses and staff of Baptist Memorial House of Hope and the Dr.'s, nurses and staff of the Regional Cancer Treatment Center at Shannon and the family and friends that have supported us with their prayers and visits.
