Elizabeth Ellen Pool

Elizabeth Pool Elizabeth Pool, 88, went peacefully to be with her Lord, surrounded by her loving family, on the evening of August 5, 2012. She was born in San Angelo, Texas, on November 10, 1923 to Vester Thomas Hughes and Mary Ellen Tisdale Hughes. Elizabeth, "Snookie", grew up in Mertzon where going to Sunday School and church at the First Baptist Church was a constant and significant event in her childhood years and remained so throughout her life. She was baptized in Spring Creek when she was seven. Snookie graduated from Mertzon High School as Valedictorian of her class in 1940, at age 17. Elizabeth received a degree from Baylor University in 1944. She married the love of her life, Frank Morrow Pool, on February 16, 1946. The couple lived briefly in Livingston where Frank worked for Humble Oil. In 1948, they moved to San Angelo, where they raised their family and have lived happily for the past 64 years. Elizabeth had a passion for the Lord and helping others. She was involved with the Women's Missionary Union, Lighthouse for the Blind, and the Shannon Auxiliary. Elizabeth regularly taught adult Sunday School classes at First Baptist Church and enjoyed opening her home to missionaries and her church family. Elizabeth had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh. She had many loving friends. With them, she shared in community activities, bowling, and bridge. Elizabeth and Frank loved to travel and treasured their summers at their home in Lake City, Colorado, where they spent precious time with their family and friends. The center of Elizabeth's life was her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, and "Nana" whose love, generosity, and selflessness is an inspiration to all of us. Snookie adored her large, extended family and loved all of her nieces, nephews, and cousins. Because her heart was filled with the love of Christ, our Nana was able to teach us how to love and be a family. She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved son, Frank M. Pool, Jr. She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Frank Morrow Pool; children Mary Ellen Hartje and Martha Jean Elder; daughter-in-law Valrie Pool; brother Vester Thomas Hughes, Jr.; grandchildren Lara West and husband Tim, Kristen Pirkey and husband Will, Lauren Martin and husband Taylor, Erin Coy and husband Jake, Elizabeth Chambers and husband David, and Stephen Elder and wife Wynne; great-grandchildren Owen Martin, Natalie Coy, Rose Chambers, Lawson Chambers, Camp Elder, and Asher Elder; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and, lifelong friend, Ossie Thomas. Our family would like to express deep gratitude to the loving and loyal caregivers who took care of Nana in her home: Barbara, Bernice, Jeanne, Judy, Lacy, Leni, Linda, Lisa M, Lisa W, Mandy, Lourdes, Stacy, Teresa, Machala, Angie, and church friend Janet Faulkner. We also appreciate the care given by the fourth floor north Shannon nurses, Dr. Hughston, and the Hospice Angels. A celebration of Elizabeth's life will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 8 at the First Baptist Church of San Angelo. Family friend, Reverend Martus Miley will conduct the service. Arrangements are with Robert Massie Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of San Angelo, First Baptist Church, Meals for the Elderly, Angelo State University, or a charity of your choice. Elizabeth was a lady with uncommon grace. We were all blessed to have had sweet Nana in our lives.
