Gwen Behringer

Mrs. Elsie Gwendolyn Behringer, 88, passed away in San Angelo, Texas on November 16, 2011. Born December 31, 1922 in Oklahoma, Gwen grew up in Lyford, TX and graduated from Lyford High School in 1939. She attended business college in Brownsville, TX prior to moving to San Angelo to work at Carr Field (Mathis Field) with her sister Letha. As one of the "Goodfellow Girls", she marched in the 1941 Rodeo Parade helping carry a float- sized US flag. On November 8, 1942, she married a young soldier named B.J. Behringer in the parlor of the First Baptist Church. B.J. passed away on December 5, 1968 after 26 years together. In 1969, Gwen began working as the Holiman Elementary School secretary and later worked in the SAISD as the executive secretary to the assistant superintendent until she retired. She delighted in well kept orderly records, properly dated, correctly spelled and all t's crossed and i's dotted. Gwen was a thirty-year 4-H leader of the Lakeview 4-H Club influencing two generations to "Make the Best Better". A Life Member of the PTA, she served on the Area Council for many years. She was also a member of the Tom Green County Extension Education Association-Live Oak Club and was noted for her scrapbooks. As a DAR member, she enjoyed supporting local history and patriotic programs. A long time member of the Lifepoint Baptist Church, she treasured her friends in her Sunday School class and study group. One of her favorite volunteer activities after retirement was being a VIP in her daughter's classroom. Affectionately known as Mrs. B.; she provided a warm accepting and patient grandmotherly presence for children. Gwen was also a member of the Eastern Star. Gwen was preceded in death by her parents, Martin L. and Elsie Houghton Yundt, her husband, B.J. Behringer, her husband's parents, Dell and Bessie Behringer and an infant son. Also preceding her in death were her brothers and sisters, Letha Mahony, Ledoit Yundt, Elva Delony, Charles Yundt and nephews and niece, Clarence Marvin Heinlein, Roy Yundt, Trent Delony and Amy Kelly. She is survived by her children, Rebecca Buck and husband Lonnie L. Buck, James Dell (Jim) Behringer and wife Donna, grandchildren Jennifer Hair and husband Michael Hair, Kevin Buck, B.J. Behringer and wife Jessica and great-grandchildren Katie, Maya and Amial Hair. Gwen also leaves to cherish her memory a beloved sister-in-law, Betty Yundt, nieces and nephews Melvyn Mahony, Janet Nichols, Tom Mahony, Joan Mahony, Rosemary Mahony, Martin Edward Yundt, Linda Worton, Aaron Yundt, Mary Elsie Dube, James Delony, Debra Graham, Eric Yundt and John Yundt -Pacheco and many great- nieces and great-nephews. Surviving cousins are Margie Applegate, Kay Cook and Joanne Calvert-Yundt. We will always remember her infectious giggle and deep abiding love for her family, friends, community and country. She was keenly interested in acquiring new knowledge, travel and "seeing the elephant when it was in town". Some words from a friend sum up Gwen's life...unafraid of life, met it head-on without complaint, radiated optimism, a staunch, sturdy person of great dignity. Go with God, you will be missed. Family visitation will be on Sunday, November 20, 2011 at Robert Massie Funeral Home from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00P.M. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. at Lifepoint Baptist Church with burial at Fairmont Cemetery. Arrangements are by Robert Massie Funeral Home.
