Hershel G. Hyatt passed away Friday, April 11, 2008 in a local nursing home. He was born on March 5, 1917 in San Angelo and lived here all his life. Mr. Hyatt retired from the City Fire Department in 1974 and also worked as a jeweler for Holland's Jewelry Co. for many years. He served with the Second Marine Division during World War II from July 1943 to December 1946. During this time, he participated in four Beachhead Landings. These included Tarawa Atoll, Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa. His Unit fought on Okinawa until Japan surrendered and was then transferred to Nagasaki, Japan as part of the Occupation Forces until the War ended. He was, again, called to serve his country during the Korean Conflict and served proudly from December 1950 until January 1952. Mr. Hyatt was preceded in death by his parents, John Lawrence and Minnie (Peck) Hyatt, his wife of 57 years, Juanita (Luckett) Hyatt, his brother, John L. Hyatt, who was killed in action during World War II and his five sisters. He is survived by his daughter, Dolores Osteen and her husband, Richard of San Angelo; two granddaughters, Diane Janzen and her husband, Bryan of Paint Rock, TX and Renee Beale of Austin; two great-granddaughters, Autumn Stewart of Indianapolis, IN and Lauren Stewart of San Angelo; and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 14, 2008 at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Chaplain Mike Andress officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made in Hershel Hyatt's name to Hospice of San Angelo. The family wishes to thank the entire staffs and volunteers of Hospice of San Angelo and Park Plaza Nursing Center for their caring and for being there when they were needed, and also special thanks to LaVerne Morris, Teresa, Mary, Janet, Mary C., Donna, Rose, Jean, Mr. Bond and Chaplain Mike.
