J. G. "Bud" Pickett, 80 of San Angelo died Thursday, January 15, 2009 at an area nursing home. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Monday January 19, 2009 at the Robert Massie Funeral Home with Rev. Emmett Corker, pastor of Northridge Baptist church, officiating. Burial will follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Bud was born January 14, 1929 in Bowie, Texas as the only child to George Henry and Mabel Stevens Pickett. He was a star football and baseball player for the Bowie Jackrabbits. He attended the University of Texas where he played on the football team in 1947 and 1948. He was an avid UT football fan for life and later was very competitive in playing golf. Bud served his country as an Army paratrooper and made 49 successful jumps during the Korean War. Bud married Patti Fountain in San Angelo, Texas on January 18, 1961. He retired with Petrolite Oil Company then went on to start Magic Farms Greenhouse in 1981. Bud was an exceptional gardener and plant enthusiast. Bud is preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Patti Pickett; two daughters; Lana Arrott and husband, Kit and their two children, Cam and Dylan Arrott, all of San Angelo and Shane Pickett and her two children, Zane and Taylor Pickett, all of Austin and a long time friend, Jerry Montalvo. Pallbearers will be Kit Arrott, sonny Arrott, Philip Montalvo, John Begnaud, nick Ortiz and Kevin Kevin McKeown. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bud's memory may be made to Hospice of San Angelo at 36 E. Twohig Suite 1100, San Angelo, Texas 76903 or to the American Cancer Association or the American Heart Association.
