JESS WHITMAN

Jesse DeWitt Whitman, 74, was born to Gertrude Frances and William Whitman on March 23, 1932 in Abilene, Texas. He passed away on Wednesday, July 12, 2006. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 22nd, at 3 pm, in the chapel of Robert Massie Funeral Home. Jess graduated from the University of Texas with a business degree in traffic and transportation and enjoyed working for many years in the field of freight transportation. He retired in San Angelo because he loved the city's history, citizenry, and all the civic activities that made it a fine community to call home. Because he wanted to be a part of the grassroots efforts to protect and preserve our heritage, he was very active in the Republican Party at the county, state, and national levels. He served as a Tom Green County precinct chairman and precinct judge and was a delegate to precinct, county, and state conventions. He was very pleased to be able to attend the Republican Party State Convention held in San Antonio in June. Jess was preceded in death by his father, and mother, and by his sister, Mary Frances Travis. He is survived by his children Kay Keen and husband, Stan of Mertzon; Mark Whitman and wife, Debbie, of Aspermont; Pam Hyde and husband, Joe, of Irving; and Ray Whitman and wife, Melanie, of Houston. Jess has four granddaughters, three grandsons, and one great grandson. The family wishes to express special thanks to Dr. Rahman, and his staff, Melanie and Kristin, to Dollie Culver of the Vista Care Hospice team and to Sherry Hansen. In lieu of flowers, Jess requested memorials be made to Meals for the Elderly and the Adult Literacy Council of the Concho Valley.
