Jim Castaneda Ornelas, 76 of San Angelo, passed away on March 19, 2015 surrounded by his family at his home. Rosary will be recited 6 PM Sunday, March 22. 2015 at Robert Massie Riverside Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 AM Monday, March 23, 2015 a St. Mary Catholic Church with Father Joey Faylona officiating. Burial will follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. He was born on December 22, 1938 to Adela Castaneda and Santiago Ornelas in San Angelo. As a young man, Jim joined the United States Army and was honorably discharged on January 31, 1965. On May 3, 1959 he married Mercedes Soto at St. Mary Catholic Church in San Angelo. Jim enjoyed a good cowboy movie and one of his fondest memories as a young man was caddying for Randolph Scott at the San Angelo Country Club. He loved the game of golf and was a member of Pan American Golf Association. Jim is survived by his loving spouse of 55 years Mercedes Ornelas, son Jim Ornelas Jr. and wife GayDonna, daughter Kathy Castanuela and husband Daniel, grandchildren Jimmy Ornelas and wife Melissa, Danny Castanuela, Kara Ornelas, and Alexandra Castanuela, great-grandchildren Tru Ornelas and Zaydrien Muro, and brother Joe C. Ornelas. He was preceded in death by his parents and beloved sister Dell Ornelas. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staffs of Angels Home Health and Gentiva Hospice for their love and care during Jim's illness.
