Joe Dale Black went to be with the Lord on December 11, 2017. He was preceded in death by his son Steven Mintrell Black, his father Mintrell Black, his mother Jessie B Saunders Black, his grandfather William Vance Black, and grandmother Mary Truefina Black. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Carol I. (Flye) Black, his daughter Mary Carol (Black) Dalla Betta and her husband Daniel Dalla Betta. Three grandchildren Casey Daniel Dalla Betta and wife Shana, Nicole Carol Arguello and her husband Ronnie, and Carina Ida Dalla Betta, and 2 great grandchildren Enzo Daniel Dalla Betta, and Avalyn Mary Arguello, all living in the Metropolitan area of Denver Colorado, his ½ sister Mary Dean Strickland and Husband Tommy Strickland of Lufkin, Texas Joe Dale Black was born December 12, 1936 in Berwyn, Oklahoma (now Gene Autry Oklahoma) to Mintrell Leslie Black and Jessie B. Saunders Black. His mother died 11 days after giving birth, his father Mintrell Black died when he was 11 years old. His grandparents William Vance Black and Mary Truefina Black raised him to adulthood. Joe met the love of his life Carol I. Flye in Ardmore, Oklahoma and they were married on May 5, 1956 In Gainesville, Cooke County Texas. Joe was raised on a farm 2 miles North of Berwyn, Oklahoma and was taught the ethics of hard work and above all to be an honest person. Joe went to school at the Berwyn school the first through the 9th grade and then they moved to Davis Oklahoma in 1951, and he was a member of the graduating class of Davis High School of 1954. Joe got his first real job in June of 1954 as a janitor at West Texas Wholesale of Amarillo and then became a salesman in 1959 based in San Angelo, Texas. He was transferred to the Denver Colorado Metro area in 1965 and sold mainly to the Military Base Exchanges and Commissary Stores. Joe changed companies in 1969 and went to work for Donald Bruce and Co. out of Chicago, Ill. He stayed with them, traveling all across the US including Hawaii, until his retirement. After retiring in 1991 Joe and Carol moved back to San Angelo Texas in 1995 to get out of the cold and to be near all of their friends in San Angelo. Joe was an avid golfer and for many years was a scratch golfer. He was loved and feared on many golf courses in Denver and Texas. In 1993 he won the Senior Club Championship at Willis Case golf course in Denver. He loved classic automobiles and was a member of the Antique Auto Club of America. He was the tour director of the Grand Old Tour in 2005 and 2010. He dearly loved his 1940 Ford Deluxe Coupe. In 2002 his wife told him he could buy a 1955 Packard Clipper but it had to be HER car, so he did. They also have a 1977 El Camino that was purchased new and it still looks like the day it came off the lot. He would like to thank his friends at Bentwood Country club for all the years of friendship, gin rummy, and companionship; all the members of the car club for many great moments and memories and all the other people who graced him with love and friendship over his 80 years of life. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Meals for the Elderly in San Angelo. Funeral Services will be at 1:00PM on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at Robert Massie Funeral home. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery in Amarillo, TX on Wednesday December 20, 2017 at 10:00 am.
