Remembering Johnnie Mae Scott Ninety-six years ago on December 14,1920, Tom Carter Sr. and Effie Brown Carter beamed with joy at the birth of their daughter, Johnnie Mae. She joined a robust family where they lived in the country. Her mother, father, several of siblings and two stepsons predeceased her. The brothers were Jimmy Carter, Tom Carter Jr., Alf Carter, James Carter, Billie Eugene Carter, and H. C. Carter. Her sisters were Tommie Mae Crawford, Ella Mae Holt Davis, and Addie Lee White. Her two stepsons were James Scott and Raymond Scott. As a child, she was strong willed, smart and independent. Those traits characterized her throughout her life. She married the love of her life, Odell Scott, who had three boys. Johnnie Mae embraced the parental responsibilities with love and zest. She loved to cook, iron and do all kinds of house work. When Odell died she still took care of her guys. She did it such with ease and joy and called herself a "Domestic engineer." Later in her senior citizen years she earned her GED and hours toward an associate degree. Johnnie Mae was a classy dresser. She loved clothes and until a few months ago every Sunday she dolled up with a hat and heels. Her legacy is deeply rooted in her spiritual walk and she was a role model to all age groups. She lived for and loved her church responsibilities. A salient point in her life was her strong intimate relationship with God. Her knowledge of the bible was amazing and she spoke on many programs and taught Sunday School. A lover of missions and church associations where she was an officer for many years, she was committed and attended local and national conferences. Additionally, she worked diligently raising money to restore the community cemetery and received recognition from the city. During her short illness, she remained strong in her faith always seeking God's directions. She heeded her call and was promoted to her heavenly home. She made the transition on January 24, 2017. Johnnie Mae leaves to morn her a stepson, Odell Scott, San Angelo, Texas: Sisters Dorothy Hunter and Ruth Bernice Moore from Austin, Texas: Nieces and nephew from Houston, Texas are Mary Holt Ashley, Effie Louise Skinner, Ella Dixon and Billie Eugene Holt. Nieces and Nephews from Austin, Texas include Maryetta Carter Bills, Linda Faye Moore, Arthur Lee Moore, Barbara Ann Moore, Duane Terrell Hunter and Lewis Edward Hunter. Johnnie Mae has a host of lovely supportive friends and some call her "Mother Scott." A special family who Johnnie Mae cherished were Maxine and Bobby Bunyard who she worked for many years and helped to raise their children. As God would have it Kristen Bunyard, the grand daughter and her mother Becky Shurbet took care of Johnnie Mae in her last days. The Mickey Sallee family was another employer that she loved who had been helpful to her for many years.
