Katherine's life will be celebrated by her loving family and friends with visitstion on Monday, June 25, 2007 from 6:30PM to 8:00PM at Robert Massie Funeral Home on Rio Concho Dr. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, June 26, 2007 at the Robert Massie Riverside Chapel with Rev. Ron Sutto of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Following the service Katherine will be laid to rest in the family plot beside her husband, Joe, in Fairmount Cemetery in San Angelo. Services are by Robert Massie Funeral Home. She was born on November 26, 1906 in San Angelo, Texas to Rob and Kate Andrew. Dr. S.L.S. Smith, former surgeon at Ft. Concho, delivered Katherine in the Andrew home on West Twohig. Her father was owner of R.J. Andrew Saddle Shop, and the maker of the Famous Concho Saddles. As a resident of San Angelo for almost 100 years, Katherine saw the frontier town of 3,000 people grow to a population of 88,000. She remembered the first telephone in San Angelo and its first automobile. She was a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church. "Our horse pulled the buggy to church with no touch from the reins. He knew the way." Katherine attended local schools and graduated in 1926 from San Angelo High School. In 1930 Katherine was diagnosed with a serious case of tuberculosis. She entered the State Tuberculosis Sanatorium just west of San Angelo. After a year of treatment, she was cured. Katherine got down to 87 lbs, and she was expected to die, but she outlived all of her doctors. She went on to enter nurses' training and to become a tubercular nurse. She married Joe Weldon Carr of Whitewright, Texas in 1932. They made their home in San Angelo and shared the love of travel, art, and family through the years. The family grew to include Joanne and Alan. During World War II; Joe was involved in defense work. The family lived in Houston, Texas; Gadsden, Alabama; Topeka, Kansas and Nashville, Tennessee. One highlight of the Carr's marriage was the celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary on September 2, 1982. Katherine's husband, Joe, died November 20, 1990. She continued to live by herself in the home that they built in 1941 on Allen Street. Although she was wheelchair-bound in later years, she remained active in church, DAR-Pocahontas Chapter, luncheons, bingo, shopping and growing iris. She never failed to keep her weekly hair appointment. Katherine delighted in winning ribbons at the fair for her needlework and baking entries. Her constant activity was made possible by her companion and friend, Clemencia Lopez, and later, Clara Martinez. In the 1980's Katherine began writing the memories of her life, of her family, and early days in San Angelo. These recollections grew to three volumes, which her daughter Joanne, illustrated and computerized as a legacy to the family. Genealogy was another interest. At her children's insistence, Katherine moved to Fredericksburg, Texas in 1995 to be with family. She always informed people that she was only "visiting". Her home was in San Angelo. Her life was grounded in faith, family and friends. Katherine is survived by her daughter, Joanne Carr Hayes and husband, Joe, of Clear Lake, Texas and by her son, Alan Carr and wife, Karen of Fredericksburg, Texas; four grandchildren: Katherine Hayes of Austin, Texas, Dennis Hayes and wife, Genie of Friendswood, Texas, Lauren Carr of Everett, Washington and Ashley Carr of Austin; six great-grandchildren: Blake, Joe, Audrey, Emily, Nora Katherine and Charlie Hayes; and four great-great-grandchildren: Caleb, Danny, Gavin and Veda Hayes all of Clear Lake; plus numerous cousins. The family gratefully thanks the loving staff of Knopp Nursing Home where Katherine resided her last six years. Their extraordinary care and concern at all levels brought us great peace of mind.
