Kay Kirby Anderson, 89, of San Angelo joined hands with her loving Lord on Saturday, February 19, 2011 in a local care facility. Kay was born May 26, 1921 at home; a ranch on the west bank of the Concho River at some point between what is now Kirby Community Park and O.C. Fisher Da. She spent her early years there and in Knickerbocker. She attended school in Knickerbocker and at Tankersley through third grade. Kay graduated San Angelo High School in 1939. She was active in Homer Anderson's High School Orchestra. Funeral services will be 2:00 Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at Robert Massie Riverside Chapel with Dr. Tommy King of Johnson Street Church of Christ officiating. Burial will follow at Fairmount Cemetery. Arrangements are with Robert Massie Funeral Home. Kay married Harold M. "Andy" Anderson in May 1941. They spent most of their early married years in military service, the Air Force. She received a B.A. Degree in Speech and Drama from East Texas State Teachers College in 1954. In 1960 she attended Baylor University and became a certified Speech and Hearing Therapist. Kay taught Speech and Drama at Breckenridge High School in San Antonio from 1962 to 1967. Her students won many awards for their accomplishments in both Speech and Drama areas. Early in her family life, she spent many years as a Sunday school and Bible Teacher. She sang with the church coral groups for special occasions and did much public work in plays and programs. She was a longtime member of Johnson Street Church of Christ. Kay loved to play bridge and was at one time a Master bridge player. In recent times, she was proud of her family's legacy, Kirby Community Park. She was preceded in death by her oldest daughter, Sharon Anderson McGovern. Survivors include her husband of 69 years, Lt. Col. Harold M. Anderson and daughter, Andrea Etheridge and her husband Harry of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Sister-in-law, Barbara Anderson of Georgetown, Texas; Grandchildren, James McGovern; Andy Wallace; and Stacy Dowd and six great grandchildren.
