Leota N. Condray, 90, of San Angelo passed away on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 in a local nursing home. Leota was born on April 29, 1920 to James B. and Beulah Nixon near Paris, Texas. She lived there with the family until age 7. At that age, because of malaria in the family, they moved to Scurry County where she remained and attended public school. The family moved to Whiteface, Texas, where she graduated from High School in 1938. She graduated from West Texas State College with a Bachelors Degree of Science with a major in Home Economics in 1944. She completed a degree of Masters in Home Economics Education from Texas Tech in 1957. She taught school in Texas for 32 years before retirement in May 1980. She married R. L. Condray and they shared 45 years of life until his death in 1988. They shared experiences of mutual interest. In their senior years, they began taking foster children which was a rewarding experience. The first one brought to them was Jerry Wilcox who was born with mild cerebral palsy and remains near to her until the present. His progress was phenomenal and is now living and managing living in an apartment alone, which was predicted he would never be able to do. He claims them as parents and they treated him as a son. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 15, 2011 at Baptist Memorial Chapel located at Baptist Memorial Retirement Center. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 15, 2011 at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens with Brother Guy White officiating. Arrangements are with Robert Massie Funeral Home. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers, John Nixon, Russell Nixon, Joe Nixon, and Cleo Nixon; and one sister, Bonnie Belle Nixon. Leota is survived by her son, Jerry Wilcox of San Angelo; sisters, Mavis Overman and husband, Fred of Rising Star, TX; Helen Nixon of San Angelo; sister-in-law, Mary Nixon; nieces and nephews, Carolyn Nixon of San Angelo, Dwayne Overman and wife, Sandra of Eastland, Fred Overman and wife, Tina of Cooper, TX; Marlin Overman and wife, Linda of Cisco, TX; Revis Gardner and husband, Todd of Anaconda, MT; Dennis Randall Nixon and wife, Maxine of Waco, TX, Jerry Mayfield, Terry Mayfield, Beth Landis, Brenda Lewis and Kathy Nixon.
