Marjorie Lynette Marquis Slagle died on Thursday, September 29, 2011 at Shannon Medical Center surrounded by her family. She was born on October 17, 1918 in Houston, TX to Lee Edward Marquis and Mary Essie Council Marquis. In 1928, after living in Georgia, Central Texas and Lamesa, TX she moved with her family to McCamey, TX. Marjorie graduated in 1936 as Valedictorian of McCamey High School. After completing Draughon's Business School in Abilene, Marjorie graduated from Sam Houston State Teachers College in Huntsville, Texas where she received a Bachelor's of Arts Degree in English. She was a member of Alpha Chi Honor Society for high school valedictorians, Sigma Tau Delta for English Majors and Alpha Theta Sigma. As a graduate student, she attended the University of Puebla, Mexico where she was also an exchange teacher. She also attended graduate school at the University of Colorado at Boulder and Angelo State University. While teaching elementary school in McCamey, Marjorie met Robert Gwin Slagle, the principal of McCamey Elementary School. They were married on December 7, 1946 in San Angelo, TX where they moved in 1951. They both taught school for many years in San Angelo and were some of the first adult education teachers in the school district. Marjorie was a 41 year member of the Theta Omicron Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma; American Association of University Women; San Angelo Retired Teachers; Texas International Reading Association and lifetime member of the Texas State Teachers and the National Education Associations. She was also a member of Fort Concho Chapter Daughters of the Republic of Texas and Pocahontas Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution.She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Ruth Sunday School Class and Naomi Circle where she especially enjoyed delivering Meals For The Elderly. Marjorie played the organ and piano and enjoyed Volksmarching events with her daughters. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings Jean Berg, Elizabeth Edwards and John Marquis. Marjorie is survived by her four daughters Suzanne and James Wessels of Kerrville; Shelley Slagle; Sharon and Preston Miller; Sheri Slagle and Clint Powell all of San Angelo; Sister-In-Law Jeannine Marquis of Universal City; grandchildren Justin Miller, Melody Miller and husband Casey Kovar of San Angelo, Brian Wessels of Austin and Kevin Wessels of College Station; numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be her son-in-laws and grandsons. Viewing will start from 8:00am to 8:00pm Tuesday October 4, 2011 and continue on Wednesday October 5, 2011 with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Robert Massie Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 2:00pm Thursday October 6, 2011 First United Methodist Church with Pastor Dale Weise officiating. Burial will follow in Belvedere Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements are with Robert Massie Funeral Home. The family would like to thank the staff at Shannon Medical Center and Dr. Charles Jones.
