Martha Louise Menchaca Flores, 79, of San Angelo, went to be with our Lord on Tuesday, November 14, 2017, at her residence, surrounded by her family and closest friends. Martha was born on July 9, 1938 in San Angelo, Tx. Martha worked at Ethicon Inc. in San Angelo for 39 years. Though Martha took her final breath this week, we recognize that Alzheimer's disease took her mind and spirit from us several years ago, and that we've slowly been saying goodbye to her ever since. Now, as we grieve her earthly death, we rejoice and find comfort in knowing that she is at Home, that she is at peace, and that her mind has been restored. With Martha's mind free from the grips of Alzheimer's, her family and friends are now free to grieve the wonderful woman she was and to remember her as she would want to be remembered. Martha was a devoted daughter, dedicated mother, proud grandmother, adoring great-grandmother, caring sister, kind aunt, and faithful friend. Though she was quiet at times, she was a woman of great strength, tremendous courage, and deep commitment to her children. Martha was both mother and provider for her children and she took those responsibilities very seriously. She loved her children fiercely and she worked hard as a single mother, sometimes taking on two or three jobs at a time, in order to provide for her children and to ensure that they always had what they needed and more. Her work ethic, bravery, and dedication to her children are her lasting legacy. As a grandmother, Martha often indulged her granddaughters in mall shopping sprees and weekly lunch dates at Luby's. When she wasn't with "the girls" (as she referred to her granddaughters), she could be found gardening in her yard, playing with her dog, Freida, watching various sports games on tv, or laughing her way through an episode of Ellen. She enjoyed teaching her granddaughters to bake and could be found quietly sneaking them tastes of cookie dough and deviled egg batter as they worked together in the kitchen. Martha loved to laugh and she had a sharp tongue that never dulled, even in her final days. She kept us laughing and we are so grateful for the years we shared with her. Martha was preceded in death by her father, Horacio Menchaca, and her brother, Tony Menchaca. Martha is survived by her mother, Ramona Menchaca of San Angelo, Tx; daughter, Sylvia Gallegos and her husband, Gilbert, of San Angelo, Tx; son, Michael Flores of Dallas, Tx; granddaughters, Analisa McCain and husband, Casey, of Midland, Tx, and Leana Escobar and husband, Kevin, of San Antonio, Tx; great-grandchildren, Grant Gilbert McCain and Flora Louise McCain; brothers, Horace Menchaca Jr of Virginia Beach, Va, and Albino Menchaca of San Angelo, Tx; sisters, Lupe Leon and husband, Joaquin, of San Angelo, Tx, and Carlotta Menchaca of San Angelo, Tx. Martha also leaves behind a loving and dedicated caregiver and friend, Sister Martina Gonzales, along with special friends Nellie and Joe Sosa, Ramona Holguin, and Trini Noriega all of San Angelo, Tx. Their dedication to her, even when her disease hadn't allowed her to remember them for several years, is a true testament to the caring and loving friend that she was to them before she began her battle with Alzheimer's. Rosary will be at 7pm on Thursday, November 16, 2017 at Robert Massie Riverside Chapel. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10am on Friday, November 17, 2017 at St. Mary Catholic Church, with Father Joey Faylona officiating. Burial will take place at Calvary Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Albino Menchaca, Michael Flores, Gilbert Gallegos, Casey McCain, Kevin Escobar, and Douglas Carney. Honorary Pallbearers will be Horace Menchaca Jr and Grant Gilbert McCain. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Viki Forlano, Jovita Diaz, San Juana Diaz and to Shandy, Rene, Amber, and Jennifer of St Gabriel's Hospice for all the kindness and support they have shown to our family. Thank you for being our village during this time and for loving and caring for Martha as we said our long goodbye. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation or to Angelo Catholic School, 2315 A&M, San Angelo, Texas 76904.
