Martha Mai Frances Gill Stephens was born Dec. 16, 1923 in Wichita, Kansas to Jane Stark Gill and Ralph Herbert Gill. She is preceded in death by her dear parents and a brother John Richard Gill. The Gill family moved to San Angelo, Texas when she was 5 years old. Her father was a Geologist in the oil business. Martha graduated from Central High School and then graduated from Stephens College in St. Louis. She studied drama under the renowned playwright William Inge. She married Morris Glen Stephens in 1943 while he was stationed in San Angelo as a pilot in the Air Force. They had one child, Michele. Martha was always active in the community and loved politics. She was a radio commentator in Waco, and acted and directed many little theatre plays in Richmond, Texas, along with commentating many Style Shows. In 1967 she moved to Red River, New Mexico where she and her 2 brothers opened the now famous "Texas Red's" steak house. She ran for Mayor of Red River, back when women did not run for elected office, and lost by 2 votes! She also worked as a Travel Agent in Santa Fe, NM where she lived for many years. So she was able to travel the world, which she loved. Martha leaves behind her devoted and loving daughter, Michele McGeeneyof New Braunfels, TX. and a brother, Bill Gill and wife, Annette and family of Red River, NM, many nieces and nephews along with so many dear friends. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her for her smile, her laugh, her attitude, and most of all her friendship. She was very special to all who knew her and loved her. Viewing will begin 12:00 noon on Friday July 8, 2011 at the Robert Massie Funeral Home with the family present from 5 to 7PM. Graveside Services will be 10:00 AM Saturday July 9, 2011 at Fairmount Cemetery with the Father Stan Burdock, officiating. Arrangements are by Robert Massie Funeral Home.
