Michael Elwood Shaffer

Major Michael Elwood Shaffer, 58, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at his home in San Angelo, TX. He was born on June 29, 1955 to James and Teruko (Sakuma) Shaffer in Ft. Leavenworth, KS., and raised in Junction City, KS. He attended high school at Geary High School and Kansas State University, where he received a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. Michael lived in San Angelo for 22 years and retired after 17 years as a parole hearing officer for the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles. Michael served his country in the US Army where he rose to the rank of Major and retired after 15 years. He was a member of Kansas State Alumni Association and loved to fish. Michael is survived by his 2 sons; Jason D. Gonzales and wife, Amy of San Angelo, TX, Michael J. Shaffer and wife, Sandy of Abilene, TX; 2 daughters; Valerie T. Shaffer of San Angelo, TX, Elizabeth M. Shaffer of San Angelo, TX; mother of the children and his caretaker in his final years; Tina M. Shaffer of San Angelo, TX; grandchildren; James C. Bishop of San Angelo, Michael J. Shaffer Jr. of Abilene, Makenna A. Shaffer of Abilene, Sesilee S. Shaffer of Abilene, Julianna Gonzales of San Angelo, Isaiah M. Shaffer of San Angelo and Sariah N. Shaffer of San Angelo, TX; 2 brothers; Eddie Shaffer and wife, Robin of Billings, MT, James W. Shaffer Jr. and wife, Mandy of Wichita, KS; and one sister; Terina Payne and her husband, Ernie of Brookfield, MO., and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by parents. Pallbearers will be Jason Gonzales, Michael Shaffer, Jesse Lazenby, Aaron Adams, Michael Molina and James Shaffer. Honorary pallbearer will be Eddie Shaffer. Family visitation will be held at 6:00 to 800pm on Thursday February 20, 2014 at Robert Massie Funeral Home, San Angelo, Texas. Funeral services will be held on 10:00am Friday February 21, 2014 at the Robert Massie Riverside Chapel, San Angelo, Texas, with Pastor Tim Wood, officiating of the Apostolic House of Worship in San Angelo. Burial will take place in the Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home. The family wishes to thank the Shannon ICU Dr.'s, nurses and staff and Baptist Memorials Hospice for the loving care and concern shown to our family. Special thanks to the Meza and Banda families for your support through this difficult time.
