After graduating early from high school, she attended Tarleton and graduated with a teaching certificate. Pauline felt called to the medical profession and became a Registered Nurse after training at the Shannon Memorial School of Nursing (Class of 1942) in San Angelo. She married Hugh Bonham on December 25, 1941. They moved to Oregon during World War II and welded in the shipyard at Swan Island (our own 'œRosie the Riveter'). Pauline left the shipyard to practice as a registered nurse for Wilamete Iron and Steel in Oregon. In December 1944, she and Hugh returned to Texas where they lived in Levelland for a short time and then made their home in San Angelo where she continued her nursing career. Pauline was a registered nurse at Shannon Hospital and was a night shift supervisor during the Polio epidemic in the late 1940'™s. On August 15, 1951 she began working as a civilian nurse at Goodfellow Air Force Base and continued there until she retired January 17, 1981. Pauline was honored as 'œCivilian of the Year' in 1980. Mrs. 'œB' loved working with the military members, doctors, and civilian medical personnel and she became life-long friends with many of them. She maintained her membership with the Shannon Alumni Association and NARFE until her death. Pauline and Hugh were members of Immanuel Baptist Church for more than fifty years. Pauline and Hugh loved to travel and were charter members of the Concho Campers Chapter of the National Camping and Hiking Association. The family wishes to thank Dr. Chris Stephens, Frances Pena, Lighthouse Hospice of Brownwood, and the staff of Oak Ridge Manor Nursing Home for your tender loving care of our special Gigi.
