Pedro Torres Varela, 84 of San Angelo passed away Thursday June 28, 2013. His family will unite to celebrate his birthday and life on July the first with grief and gratitude. Pedro's first summer day, in 1928, was experienced in La Union, New Mexico. There he was born to Ignacio and Martina Torres Varela. He married Timotea Martinez in El Paso, Texas on July 1, 1946. They shared 63 wonderful years together raising a family in the shadow of the smokestacks in Post, Texas. Pedro was an experienced and devoted spinning room mechanic in the Post cotton mill until that skill faded into history books and textile lore. His experience and devotion were likewise employed to "making your day" with a song, a laugh, a joke, or a mouse brought to life from a handkerchief. Survivors include his children; Adelina Castro and husband, Herman of Amarillo; George Varela and wife, Mary of San Angelo; Arthur Varela and wife, Julie of Lubbock; Bertha Villa and husband, Albert of San Angelo; Robert Torres and wife Maxine of El Paso; Albert Varela and wife, Kay of Grand Prairie; Stella Varela of Amarillo and Jolene Varela of San Angelo. Other survivors include 21 Grandchildren and 35 Great-Grandchildren who will dearly miss their "Papi". He is preceded in death by his wife Timotea, his parents, one sister and a brother, one daughter and one son. Visitation hours will begin at 8 AM Monday, July 1 at the Robert Massie Funeral Home where family will gather at 4 PM concluding with a Rosary from 6-7 PM. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 PM AM Tuesday July 2, 2013 at Robert Massie Funeral Home with Rev. Daniel Olivan officiating. Arrangements are by Robert Massie Funeral Home.
