Rachel Garza Zapata, 72, passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at a local hospital. Rosary will be at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at Robert Massie Riverside Chapel. Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at St. Mary Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Calvary Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home. Rachel was born to Enrique and Brunilda Garza on September 1, 1941 in San Angelo. She graduated from Central High School. Rachel then married Guillermo "Willie" Zapata on January 29, 1962. She worked twenty-five years as a librarian for San Angelo Independent School District. She belonged to the Spanish choir at St. Mary's Catholic Church and to the Women's League. She volunteered with the Rust Street Ministries. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Amelia Garza and Yolanda Gatska, and brother Enrique Garza Jr. Rachel is survived by four sons, Louis Zapata and wife Chris, Guillermo Zapata, Alfonso Zapata all of San Angelo, and Alberto Zapata of Odessa; five sisters, Oralia Fernandez and husband Sam, Leticia Sanchez and husband Ike both of San Angelo, Brunilda Torres and husband Ricardo of Midland, Mary Fernandez and husband Robert of San Diego, CA, and Della Morales and husband Joe of Abilene, thirteen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be: Gavino Zapata, Diana Munoz, Audrey Ortega, Joseph Zapata, Genaro Gonzalez, and David Montez. The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Arbor Terrace Health Care Center, Shannon Medical Center 4th South, and UT Southwestern Zale Lipshy Unit.
