Richard D. Hembree Sr, 86 of San Angelo went to be with the his Lord on Thursday January 10, 2013 at House of Hope Hospice surrounded by his loving family. Family visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 pm Friday January 18, 2013 at the Robert Massie Funeral Home. Memorial service will 10:00am Saturday January 19, 2013 at the First Baptist Church Chapel with Rev. Charles Woodward, officiating. Arrangements are with Robert Massie Funeral home. Richard graduated from Ballinger High and from Texas A & M in the class of 1947. He served in the U.S. Army in the Philippine Islands in WWII. Immediately after the war, he went to work for Humble Oil and Refining Company in Houston, Texas. He worked for Humble, and later- named Exxon, for 36 years in Odessa, Andrews, Snyder, and Midland. From Midland, he was sent to Anchorage, Alaska, on loan to Alyeska Pipeline Service Company for the building of the Alaskan Pipeline. Upon completion of the pipeline, he stayed in Alaska for two more years with Exxon working on the North Slope. He was then transferred back to Houston where he retired in 1984. After retirement with Exxon he did petroleum consulting in Midland before moving to Bronte. Richard's passion was always golf, so in Bronte he had a golf shop for a short time. He also worked (mostly volunteer) at the Singing Winds Golf Course much of the time while there. He was active in Bronte community activities, serving on the school board, Chamber of Commerce, and was a member of the Bronte volunteer fire department for 22 years. Richard and Peggy were honored as Citizens of the Year in Bronte in 2008 for their years of volunteer community service. He has lived in San Angelo four years and was a member of the Texas A & M Former Students Association, Singing Winds Golf Course, and volunteered at Shannon Medical Center gift .shop in the Women and Children's Building and was a member of the Baptist Retirement Community Auxiliary. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he was a deacon. Richard was also a Paul Harris Fellow for Rotary International. Richard married Peggy McShan at First.Baptist Church in Ballinger June 25, 1950. They have three children, Michelle Hembree Cobb and her husband, Andy, of Midland, TX, Dr. R. Dale Hembree, Jr. and his wife, Kaye of Abilene, TX., and Robert C. Hembree, of Syracuse, NY; three grandchildren, Courtnee Hembree of Midland, TX, Danielle Wilcox of Midland, TX and Michael Wilcox of Midland, TX and two great-grandchildren Payton and Sawyer Wilcox of Midland, TX. and a sister, Sue Hembree Davenport and husband, Curtis of Brownwood, TX.
