He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister and brother-in-law Joyce and Waldon Johnson, sister-in-law Billie Owen, brother-in-law's Jack McDaniel and J.T. Ford and his loving wife of 50 years, Lena Vaughn Owen. He is survived by three children: Richie and Cindy Owen; Kathy Martinez and Martin Perez; and Lisa and Butch Hasty all of San Angelo. His grandchildren are Richard Owen, Roy and Kimberly Owen, Marc and Misty Martinez, Nicolas and Kim Martinez, Jeremy Hasty and Brian Hasty. Great-grandchildren are Bryson Owen, Lena and Nico Martinez and Allie and Brodie Martinez. Surviving siblings are Muriel Ford, Opal McDaniel, J.R. Owen, Roger and Bennye Owen, Neiville and Dorothy Owen, Duane and Mary Owen and Sara and Jean Hawkins. Dick was a Veteran of World War II serving in the South Pacific Theater as a submarine torpedo-man on the USS Quillback. He liked to tell his grandchildren about fishing from the deck whenever the sub surfaced. After his honorable discharge Dick returned to Vernon to marry the love of his life, Lena Vaughn, on March 12, 1949. They owned a small burger shop for several years before he went to work for Lone Star Gas. He retired from Lone Star Gas after working for 35 years in Vernon, Snyder and San Angelo. Dick was an avid fisherman and a member of the Concho Bass Club. Many who came to tournaments with their $1000.00 bait boxes, fancy rods and flashy boats found themselves "out fished" by Dick in his 35 year old kayak with a pocket full of jigs. His family and friends were always well supplied with fish. After retirement he fished or hunted every day until he became too ill. Dick's family would like to express their deep appreciation to his kind and compassionate caregivers, Tommy Gray, Sue Manning and Joey and Lynn Roberts as well as to Hospice of San Angelo. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Hospice of San Angelo. Pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Albert Valadez, Al Flury, Roy Waterhouse, Pete Bara, Blaine Palmer, Eddie Aldrete, Leonard Priest, Tommy Gray, J.L. Varner and Burkie Harlow.
