Robert Wayne Harris

Robert Wayne Harris, 77, of San Angelo, passed away on January 10, 2017, in San Angelo after a brief illness. Visitation will from 5-7 PM on Friday, January 13, 2017, at Robert Massie Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 10 AM, Saturday, January 14, 2017, at Immanuel Baptist Church in San Angelo with his grandson, Zeke Dorr, officiating. A private burial will held at a later date at Miles. Arrangements are by Robert Massie Funeral Home. Robert was born in Clay County, TX, to Zeke and Wayne Harris on September 21, 1939. He graduated from San Angelo Lake View High School in 1958. He married Marilyn Wright Urbantke on November 2, 1984. He accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior when he was 10 years old and was baptized on October 30, 1949, at Immanuel Baptist Church where he was a member all of his life. Robert retired from the U.S. Postal Service having served as a mail carrier for 43 years. Years later, he could still put a street number to a person's name he delivered mail to more than 30 years earlier. Before delivering mail, he worked at M.L. Leddy's, Terrell Manufacturing, and extra hours processing meat at 7-10 Grocery Store on N. Chadbourne Street. Robert was an excellent horseman and in the late 1950's, he played with San Angelo's World Champion Cowboy Polo Team. As a teenager he survived both Polio and the Lake View tornado. He loved animals and always had horses, donkeys, dogs, sheep, goats and birds of various kinds. He won several awards with his homing pigeons. Robert loved to visit with family and the many friends he had accumulated and kept throughout his life. He was a master of hunting for anything that would go on a dinner plate, as well as, any predators that threatened his livestock, and he never turned down an opportunity to try a fishing hole. He was instrumental in organizing several high school reunions and enjoyed the planning as much as he did the events. He will be remembered for his love for his wife and family, his loyal friendships, his dedication to work, his ability to fix or build anything, his deep affection for animals, and his quick wit and big laugh. His sense of humor remained intact until he left us. He is preceded in death by his parents, his father and mother-in-law Roy and Elenora Wright, and his brother-in-law Lawrence Wright. He is survived by his wife Marilyn; his son Jim Bob Harris and wife Laura of Miles; his daughter Christy Dorr and husband Matt of Mineral Wells; his son Jeff Urbantke and wife Tammie of San Angelo; and his son Dusty Urbantke and wife Jodi of Muleshoe; his sister Dixie Carol Turnbow and husband H.L. of San Angelo; grandchildren Zeke, Colt and Luke Dorr; Seth, Sloan and Sawyer Harris; and Jared, Alyssa, Sidney, Kadey and Abbey Urbantke; great grandchildren Clark, Nicholas, Katchem, Kelbi and Kopper Dorr; brothers and sisters-in-law Gerald and Marlene Wright of Grape Creek, Bill and Sherry Hartman of Cuero; Kenneth and Margie Wright of Santa Anna; and Orval and Judy Wright of Victoria; his aunt Mary Whitsitt and her husband Don of Weatherford; and many other beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors-too many to name. Honorary pallbearers are Robert's U.S. Postal Service family; his Lake View Class of 1958 family; his old M.L. Leddy's family; and his 1950's Cowboy Polo family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Meals for the Elderly of San Angelo, 310 E. Houston Harte, San Angelo, TX 76903.
