Roy Edward Wilson, M.D., 88, of San Angelo passed away peacefully into eternal life in heaven while resting at his home on May 10, 2010. Visitation for family and friends is Sunday afternoon, May 16 at 911 Live Oak Street from 4:00-5:00. A graveside service will be held at Lawnhaven Cemetery with Tommy King of Johnson Street Church of Christ officiating at 10:00 in the morning Monday, May 17. Roy was born in Obion County, Tennessee, November 23, 1921 to Zenus Edward and Jennie Andrella Wilson. He grew up in a family of three boys in several small towns and farms of west Tennessee and southeast Missouri during the depression years. He learned how to work at an early age, chopping and picking cotton, plowing with mules and delivering newspapers. He graduated from high school in Dyersberg, Tennessee in 1939. His debate team won the Tennessee state championship that year and completed a top twenty finish in the National Debating Competition in Los Angeles, California. While attending Freed-Hardeman College, Roy met Mary Sue Oliver. They enjoyed 68 years of marriage until her death earlier this year. He and Sue spent the war years primarily in the weather service in Alaska. This was an intense experience for them both, and they have shared many fine stories over the years of village life, hunting and fishing. They helped start the Church of Christ in Anchorage, Alaska. After the war, Roy graduated from Abilene Christian College. He remained associated with what is now ACU for most of his life as an alumnus and member of various boards. Later he graduated from medical school at U.T.M.B.in Galveston, Texas. After internship training in Fort Worth, he worked in Seymour, Texas in general practice and anesthesiology for 6 years. Prompted perhaps by memories of his mother's mental illness, he then studied psychiatry at The University of Iowa and later settled in Springfield, Missouri. Roy practiced psychiatry for almost 40 years, finally retiring at age 80. Dr. Wilson had other interests besides practicing medicine. He was an active member of South National Church of Christ, which later became East Sunshine Church of Christ in Springfield. He enjoyed horses, and started Rocky Ridge Ranch to breed and show Arabians. He was appointed by the governor of Missouri to serve on the state mental health commission for several years and was also active in hospital administration and local medical affairs. Roy moved to San Angelo, Texas in 2005 to be closer to his son, Dan. He passed peacefully into the next life on May 10,2010. Dr. Wilson lived a good life, a life that mattered. He was a generous person, serving people in many ways and giving from his heart. By following principles derived from his faith in God, he loved his wife for 68 years, raised 3 productive children, and helped innumerable people along the way. We miss him. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Raymond and Bill Wilson, son-in-law Larry Davis and infant daughter Susan Joyce Wilson. Roy is survived by his brother James Wilson and wife Pat of Montgomery, Alabama, daughter Judy Davis of Ogden, Utah, son Edward Wilson and wife Carol of Sheridan, Wyoming, and son Dan Wilson and wife Linda of San Angelo, four grandsons and their wives-Jonathan and Sarah, Ben and Amy, Jason and Natalie, Mark and Megan, and two great-grandchildren, Amelia and Isaac.
